I probably don’t look racist. I’ve been very careful and trained myself over many years to not relate to people from other races differently than I do toward Anglos. But I still catch myself entertaining impulses and thoughts of bias against races other than my own.
I hope and trust that I’m a repentant racist. That is, that I am aware of and freely acknowledge my racism, confess it as a wrong, ask God and others to forgive it, and seek the Holy Spirit’s help to overcome it. As this has happened, I have enjoyed more and richer relationships with many new friends from other races.
We see racism in people from every race. Racism is just one of the many sins that effect human beings. Paul simply said, “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The Christian Gospel says that Jesus Christ has died and paid for all sins, justifying all who simply believe in Him.
It is likely that every human being on the face of the earth is racist to one degree or another. It would save us a lot of self-righteous anger and defensiveness to just accept that we are probably racist, believe that we are justified by Jesus Christ, and just get on with loving and being delighted by our every neighbour from every race.
