Many good things are said about Christmas. For example: “Christmas is a family time”, or “it is better to give than to receive”, or “Christmas is a time to remember the disadvantaged”, or “Merry Christmas! And a happy new year!”

These are all good sentiments, and there is nothing wrong with any of them. But none of them say the unique thing – the best thing – that needs to be said about the birth of the Son of God as the baby of Mary of Nazareth.

The truly special thing that must be said about Christmas is that Christ was born to be the Saviour of the world(Mt 1:21). This means that He saves us from all our human brokenness and fear, and from the ultimate loss that stands behind them – i.e., our sin, death and hell. It also means that He saves us into wholeness, true relationships, abundant life, and hope that transforms our life and world now, and will be eternal.

You can’t get any bigger or better than that!

At this time, dare to offer not just good sentiments but the best news about Christmas to family, friends and strangers.

Grace and lifeJonathan.
