I hope there’re some Doctor Who fans in our congregation, because the Bible says that Jesus Christ is the ultimate Time Lord! – i.e., ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever’ (Heb 13:8); and Jesus says, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” (Rev 22:13)
This means that Christian truth will never be ‘out of date’, or ‘left behind by history’. How can it be? – the One who gave us the truth is the One who will be revealed as Lord at the end of history, to reign as such forever. The truth that Jesus gave us in the Bible is light years ahead of us. When we abandon that truth, then we are out of touch with where history is really headed.
This also means that Jesus’ saving mercy will never cease to be relevant, however much people protest that there is no such thing as God’s law or sin, that wrong doesn’t need to be confronted, much less forgiven. Which also means that Jesus’ saving mercy will never cease to be available to us, and never cease to give us fullness of life.
Finally, this also means that the world and history can’t escape the most positive possible future. At the endand forever Jesus plans to raise all who hope in Him to eternal life, and make the world and universe new and eternal, healed of climate change, and free of nuclear contamination, warfare and death!
I’d like to see even the Doctor do that!
